Story comprehension (auditory short narratives from Aesop’s fables, followed by 2-AFC comprehension questions) reliably activates bilateral ATL, including lateral, inferior, and polar temporal regions, which a semantic arithmetic control task does not.

Methods:

  • Story task: short Aesop’s fable stories presented via MRI-compatible headphones, followed by a 2-alternative forced-choice question testing story content
  • Math task: active attentional control — serial addition/subtraction problems, 2-AFC response (used to cancel non-semantic auditory/attentional activations)
  • Initial cohort N = 18 at Medical College of Wisconsin; validated across 6 further sites (N = 77 total across 7 US centers)
  • Analysis: Story > Math contrast at group level; cluster threshold p < .005 corrected

  • Story > Math robustly activated lateral and inferior ATL bilaterally, as well as medial temporal regions
