5.7 Limitations

5.7.1 Resting-State fMRI Limitations

Resting-state fMRI has a great advantage for performing functional connectivity analyses. Since the HCP-datasets includes 812 subjects, the statistical power allows for 37 ROIs and still converges in significant results.

5.7.2 Absence of an Auditory Spatial Task in the HCP Battery

A critical constraint on the behavioural validation of the dorsal “where” stream concerns the HCP task battery itself. The HCP does not include an auditory spatial working memory task — that is, a paradigm in which participants must localise, track, or retain information about the spatial position of sounds. The closest available proxy, the 2-Back Place task, is a visuo-spatial working memory paradigm using landscape photographs. As a consequence, the test of the FEF-anchored “where” stream (Section 4.6.2) is not a direct probe of auditory-spatial processing but a cross-modal one, relying on the supramodal hypothesis itself to justify the transfer from visual to auditory spatial function.

This limitation has two practical consequences. First, the weak and inconsistent dorsal submodel predictions for Place Acc and Place RT cannot be unambiguously attributed to a failure of the auditory “where” stream; they may equally reflect the inadequacy of the paradigm as a test of auditory-spatial cognition. Second, the ventral system’s dominance in predicting Place Acc — interpreted here as strategic object-recognition — may be artificially inflated precisely because the visual paradigm invites semantic strategies that a purely auditory-spatial task would not. Future work should employ dedicated auditory spatial working memory tasks (e.g., spatial N-back with dichotic or spatialised stimuli) to provide a direct test of the FEF-dorsal stream hypothesis.

5.7.2 Glasser Atlas

Considering ambiguities in A4 and A5 and those regions showing functional connectivity to both streams, this could imply that those regions could be further devided into anterior and posterior parts

5.7.3 Missing Directionality
